Vallisneria (Eelgrass)
Vallisneria spp.
Description
Vallisneria (Eelgrass) is one of the classic plants for large discus aquariums. The long vertical leaves create natural shade and hiding zones. It propagates rapidly through runners.
🌍 Origin
Native to Southern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and SW Asia — now naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
Appearance
Long (30–80 cm), thin, green leaves. Varieties: gigantea, spiralis, nana, americana.
Recommended parameters
Compatibility with discus
Creates excellent shade for discus + hiding spots for fry. Rapid propagation = needs control.
Care
Nutrient-rich substrate, medium light. Trim the tips if they reach the surface.
Substrate
Sand or active substrate. Plant with the crown above the substrate.
Fertilization
Root tabs at planting, weekly liquid fertilizer.
💡 Practical tips
- →Don't cut the crown — you'll kill it
- →Young runners can be detached once they have 3–4 leaves
- →Too little light = yellow leaves
