Everything you need for a thriving discus aquarium

Discus are among the most demanding aquarium fish — not because they're impossible to keep, but because they demand consistency. Discus.ro gives you the tools that make the difference between a tank that runs for years and one that becomes a constant source of frustration.

Maintenance: the routine that saves your fish

The personalized care plan generates a 30-day calendar with daily, weekly and monthly tasks: water changes, parameter testing, filter cleaning, behavioral observations. Instead of guessing what needs doing, you get a clear schedule that adapts to your fish's stage and your goals. For the moments when something seems off, the visual diagnostic guides you through symptoms and recommends concrete steps to check.

Calculators: decisions based on numbers, not impressions

Our calculators take the guesswork out of the equation: the real volume of your tank, water changes suited to your population, food quantity per stage, monthly maintenance cost, exact treatment dose and the RO/tap proportion for your target TDS. All calculated using recipes validated by the international community of discus keepers.

All the tools on this page are free and require no account. They're built by keepers for keepers, based on the experience of the Discus.ro community. If you notice something that could be improved or want to suggest a new tool, get in touch — the tools grow together with the community.

What you can do with the Discus.ro tools

The 9 tools below cover the most important daily decisions in discus care: how much and when to change water, how much food to feed, how to dose treatments correctly and how to mix reverse osmosis water. They're all free, account-free and calibrated specifically for the parameters discus need (28–30°C, pH 6.0–6.8, TDS under 200 ppm).

Visual diagnostic

Check off the symptoms you observe (darkening, refusing food, white feces, rapid breathing) and get a list of likely causes plus steps to verify. Useful before applying any treatment — many symptoms have multiple causes.

Water changes

Recommends the weekly percentage (25–50%) based on volume, population and stage (juveniles need daily changes of 30–50%, adults only 1–2 changes/week). Includes the Seachem Prime dose for dechlorination.

Tank volume

Calculates the gross volume from L×W×H and the real usable volume after subtracting the substrate, hardscape and water level below the rim. The usable volume is what you use for treatment dosing and water change calculations.

Discus food

Estimates the daily quantity in grams and the meal frequency based on stage: fry (5–7 meals/day), juveniles (3–4 meals), adults (2 meals). Prevents overfeeding — the main cause of ammonia problems in new tanks.

Monthly cost

A realistic budget: electricity (200–300W heater, filter, light), water for changes, food, dechlorinator and filter consumables. Useful before you start — a 300L tank can cost the equivalent of 30–50 EUR/month to maintain.

Treatment doses

An indicative calculator for common products (eSHa HEXAMITA, eSHa Gdex, Seachem MetroPlex, praziquantel, metronidazole) based on the real volume of your tank. Note: always check the manufacturer's instructions — the calculator does not replace official guidance.

RO + tap water mixer

Calculates the exact proportion of reverse osmosis water and tap water to reach your target TDS: 100–200 ppm for display, 80–120 ppm for breeding, under 30 ppm for wild Heckel/Altum.

Stocking

The optimal number of discus based on volume: the general rule is 40–50L/adult discus. For a harmonious group you need at least 5–6 specimens — discus are shoaling fish and get stressed alone or in pairs.

Unit converter

Quick conversions between common units: °C ↔ °F (temperature), TDS ppm ↔ µS/cm (conductivity), °dGH ↔ mg/L CaCO₃ (hardness). Includes the pH scale with the optimal zones marked for discus (6.0–6.8).
