Description
Biological Filter Media, Seachem Matrix, 2L is a high porosity biomedia that provides effective biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. Matrix™ is a porous inorganic solid approximately 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of Matrix™ provides the same surface area (>~700 m2) as 170 liters of plastic beads! Plastic biomedia only offers external surface area, while Matrix™ provides both external and internal macro-porous surface area. These macro-pores are ideally sized to support nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria.
This allows Matrix™, unlike other forms of biomedia, to eliminate nitrates along with ammonia and nitrites, simultaneously and in the same filter. Matrix™ is completely inert and will not degrade. It does not need to be replaced. As most bacteria are internal, Matrix™ can be rinsed when necessary without damaging the filter. Matrix™ is compatible with all types of wet or wet-dry filters.
