Premium 450L setup
Complete 450L discus tank setup
A premium tank for a large discus group and aquascaping: maximum stability and aesthetics.
A premium tank for enthusiasts
A 450L tank (approx. 150×60×50 cm) is the territory of serious keepers. The large volume allows a group of 10–12 discus plus companion fish, elaborate aquascaping and a stability almost impossible in smaller tanks.
At this size, the initial investment is significantly higher, but the daily maintenance becomes more relaxed — the system has high thermal and chemical inertia.
Sump vs dual external filter
At 450L, a sump becomes a serious choice. Advantages: huge biological volume, large surface for O2, easy to access for maintenance. Disadvantages: higher cost, more noise, requires fitting into the cabinet.
The alternative: two large external filters (1500 L/h each). Simpler, quieter, but with less biological volume.
Lighting and aquascaping
At this volume, quality lighting matters not just for the fish but also for the plants and aesthetics. Programmable 60-80W LEDs (sunrise/sunset) dramatically increase the visual impact of the tank.

Clear steps: from box to your first discus
- 1Confirm the support structure — 450L full = ~550 kg; the furniture must be built specially for large tanks.
- 2Decide sump vs dual external filter and prepare the plumbing (glass holes for a sump or filter location).
- 3Place the tank, mount the sump/external filters, the heaters (3×150W) and the circulation pumps.
- 4Set up the reverse osmosis (RO) system with remineralization, if tap water has TDS > 300.
- 5Fill with properly prepared water (RO+remineralizer), start filtration and check for leaks 48h.
- 6Aquascaping (hardscape + plants) and full biological cycling 6–8 weeks.
- 7Mandatory quarantine for the group; introduce 10–12 discus at once after cycling is confirmed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A poorly sized sump or one without a safety overflow — risk of flooding the house on a power cut.
- Weak lighting for a planted aquascape — plants don't grow and algae take over the tank.
- No extra circulation pump — in 450L dead zones accumulate detritus.
- Running on hard tap water (TDS > 400) — at large volume an RO system is cheaper and safer.
- Slow step-by-step stocking — discus form aggressive hierarchies; introduce the full group at once.
- Water changes under 30% weekly — even at 450L the routine must be respected.
Frequently asked questions
How many discus can I keep in a 450L tank?
Comfortably 10–12 adult discus. More means the biological system will be overloaded and you'll have to do more frequent water changes.
Is a sump worth it for a 450L tank?
Yes, if you have the space and budget. A sump offers huge biological volume, excellent oxygenation and makes it easier to hide heaters and equipment. Downside: cost and setup complexity.
