Weekly maintenance
Water change kit for discus
The right gear for fast, safe, stress-free water changes for you and your fish.
The water change: the most important routine
For discus, a weekly water change of 30-40% isn't optional — it's the foundation of fish health. Many keepers give up this routine because it's tiring. The solution isn't to do fewer changes, but to have the right gear that turns a change into a 20-minute operation.
How to cut down water change time
Two things make the difference: a water change system connected to the tap (Python or DIY) and a container to pre-treat the new water. With these, a 100L change takes as long as drinking a coffee, not 10 trips with the bucket.
Don't forget: the new water must be at the same temperature and parameters as the tank water, otherwise you stress your fish.

Clear steps: from box to your first discus
- 1Set up the Python or DIY system from the tap to the tank — it saves 80% of the time.
- 2Prepare the pre-treatment container the night before (water + Prime + heater).
- 3Check the new water temperature against the tank — max accepted difference: 1–2°C.
- 4Siphon the substrate with slow movements, cleaning visible detritus (~20% of the surface/change).
- 5Remove 30–40% of the water, then pump the new pre-treated water straight into the tank.
- 6Check the parameters (TDS, pH) after the change to confirm the new water is compatible.
Common mistakes to avoid
- New water 3°C+ colder or warmer — thermal shock for the fish, especially fry.
- No conditioner (Prime) — chlorine/chloramines kill the biological filter.
- Aggressive siphoning of the whole substrate at once — you destroy the bacterial colony in the substrate.
- Using water straight from the tap without checking TDS/pH — big swings stress the discus.
- Changes too large (>50%) at once — abrupt parameter changes, acute stress.
- Giving up the weekly routine — discus react to fluctuations, not absolute values.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the water?
For adult discus: 30–40% weekly. For growing fry: 50% 2–3 times a week. Use our calculator for details on your situation.
Can I use water straight from the tap?
Yes, but always with a conditioner (Seachem Prime). The water must be brought to the tank temperature and checked so pH/KH are compatible — otherwise it can stress the fish.
