Description

Seachem Matrix 1L is a highly porous biomedia that provides effective biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. Matrix™ is a porous inorganic solid approximately 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of Matrix™ offers as much surface area (>~700 m2) as 170 liters of plastic beads! Plastic biomedia only provides external surface area, whereas Matrix™ offers both external macroporous surface and internal surface. These macropores are ideally sized to support nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria.

This allows Matrix™, unlike other forms of biomedia, to remove nitrates along with ammonia and nitrites simultaneously and in the same filter. Matrix™ is completely inert and does not degrade. It does not need to be replaced. Since most bacteria are internal, Matrix™ can be rinsed when necessary without damaging the filter. Matrix™ is compatible with all types of wet or wet-dry filters.
