Basic treatment kit for discus
The essential treatments every discus keeper should have ready at home.
Why have treatments at home, before you need them
When a discus gets sick, you have 24–48 hours to act effectively. Shops may have limited stock, and online orders arrive in 2–3 days. If you have the treatments at home, you act immediately.
This kit covers 90% of the common discus problems. For rare cases (TBC, advanced hexamita) you'll have time to order something specific.
How to use treatments correctly
The golden rule: never treat more than one problem at a time. Combinations can be toxic. Treat one problem, give the tank 2 weeks to recover, only then treat the next.
Always use the treatment calculator for the exact dose on the real volume of your tank.

Clear steps: from box to your first discus
- 1Before treating: confirm the diagnosis with the visual symptoms guide and a fresh water test set.
- 2Calculate the real volume of the tank (gross volume − substrate − decor) and note it on the tank.
- 3Use the treatment calculator for the exact dose on the real volume, not the gross one.
- 4Before treatment: remove the activated carbon from the filter, add extra aeration, turn off the light.
- 5Apply the treatment exactly per the instructions (days, repeated doses, water changes).
- 6After treatment: change 30–50% water, reintroduce carbon, 7–14 days break before any other treatment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating without a confirmed diagnosis — you use the wrong medication and mask the real symptoms.
- Combining treatments at the same time — toxic for the fish and the biological filter.
- Guessed doses or doses on gross volume — under-dosing → ineffective, over-dosing → poisons the fish.
- Leaving activated carbon in the filter — it absorbs the medication and cancels the treatment.
- No extra aeration — many treatments reduce dissolved O2 and suffocate the fish.
- Resuming normal feeding during treatment — many treatments require a 24–48h fast.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use several treatments at the same time?
No. Combinations are frequently toxic and mask the symptoms. Treat one problem, observe 7–14 days, then continue with the next.
How do I know the exact dose for a treatment?
Use our treatment calculator — it computes the dose based on the real volume of your tank and the manufacturer's instructions. Never dose on the gross volume.
