Snow White
Symphysodon sp.
Description
Snow White is one of the purest and most spectacular varieties of discus fish. Its pure white body with white eyes creates an ethereal and pristine appearance.
🌍 Origin & History
Snow White emerged as a mutation in domestic discus lines around 1997, when breeders succeeded in stabilizing the gene for complete depigmentation. Unlike albinos, Snow White features white eyes (not red), due to a different pigment suppression mechanism.
Appearance
Pure white body, ranging from immaculate white to slightly yellowish hues on the face. No vertical bars or stripes. Distinctive white eyes (not red like those of albinos). Transparent-white fins with a slight bluish sheen. Well-rounded body.
🧬 Genetic background
Distinct recessive mutation separate from the albino gene. Snow White likely originates from the crossbreeding of Blue Diamond × Pigeon Blood, selected for complete depigmentation. The white eyes indicate a different depigmentation gene than albinism. According to classifications: Snow White = white discus with white eyes, without vertical bars.
Recommended water parameters
Care
Sensitive to water quality. Avoid nitrate buildup.
Breeding
Moderately difficult. Two Snow White discus will produce 100% Snow White fry.
