The Green Discus from Tefé is the genetic foundation for many modern varieties. Its distinct olive-green background color with characteristic red spots makes it unmistakable in the wild world.
🌍 Origin & History
Lake Tefé and the upper Amazon tributaries (Brazil, Peru, Colombia). The most prized specimens originate from Tefé — renowned for their spectacular red spots.
Appearance
Olive-green background on the body with turquoise hues on the forehead and fins. Bright red spots distributed on the flanks and anal fin — a hallmark of the species. Nine subtle vertical bars.
🧬 Genetic background
Symphysodon tarzoo — a scientifically recognized species identified separately in 2006 by Ready et al. The unique characteristic: red spots on the body and fins, more intense in the Royal Green specimens from Tefé.
Recommended water parameters
Care
Picky but more adaptable than Heckel. Soft, slightly acidic water. A diet rich in carotenoids to enhance the red spots.
Breeding
Possible in captivity with RO water. Wild pairs form stable bonds.
