A LIVE video inspection is the definitive test — ask the seller to feed the fish on the video call and count breathing to assess health before you pay.

Quick summary

  • A good virtual inspection covers a large share of what an in-person visit would catch for assessing discus health.
  • Mandatory photos (6 angles): left side, right side, head-on, top (dorsal), underside (ventral), close-up of eyes + gills.
  • Mandatory video (3 minutes): 1 min LIVE feeding, 1 min mid-water swimming, 1 min close-up of breathing + the group.
  • 12 seller questions about water, feeding, age, source, health, quarantine and other species.
  • Traps: red-light photos (hide lesions), Instagram filters, old photos (check EXIF date), "select" angles.
  • The definitive test: a LIVE video with the date shown on the phone screen.
  • For high-value purchases: combine 3 videos on different days + 10–15 detail photos.

What you'll learn

Virtual discus inspection (Symphysodon) by photo and video is the standard method for distance purchases — many cross-region or cross-border transfers happen without an in-person visit. A good inspection can catch most health problems or scams before you pay; a poor one leaves you with a sick fish, a fake variety or a size smaller than promised. This guide gives you the complete checklist — which photos to request, which videos, which questions to ask and how to spot the usual traps of "polished" or old photos.

What you can assess virtually

✅ What you can assess well from photos and video

AspectFrom photosFrom video
Stress bars at rest✅ Excellent✅ Excellent
Body shape (round vs thin)✅ Good✅ Good
Colors and pattern✅ Excellent✅ Good
Large lesions (spots, ulcers, HITH)✅ Good✅ Good
Fins (torn, clamped)✅ Good✅ Excellent
Eyes (prominent / sunken)✅ Good⚠️ Hard close-up
Behavior (mid-water, corner)❌ No✅ Excellent
Breathing (rate)❌ No✅ Excellent (counting)
Reaction to food❌ No✅ Excellent
Group interaction❌ No✅ Excellent
Bullying / isolation❌ No✅ Good

❌ What you can't assess remotely

  • The smell of the tank (ammonia, rot)
  • Sounds (noisy filtration, failing pumps)
  • Real water quality (tests can be "arranged" for photos)
  • Real lighting vs filters/post-processing
  • Long-term behavior (a 3-min video can catch a "good" moment)
  • Reaction to your hand / interaction with the seller

Mitigation: combining 2–3 videos on different days + 10–15 photos + a LIVE video call = wide coverage.

PHOTO checklist — 6 mandatory angles

Photo 1: Left side — whole body

Ask for: the discus oriented LEFT side-on, the whole frame, natural light or neutral LED (NOT red/yellow).

What you check:

  • ✅ Stress bars (9 vertical bars) — visibility
  • ✅ Body shape — round (healthy) vs thin/"butterfly" (wasted)
  • ✅ Variety pattern — confirms the promised variety
  • ✅ Lateral fins + dorsal
  • ✅ Visible lesions

Photo 2: Right side — whole body

Why both sides? Many diseases are asymmetric (HITH on one side, parasites on one gill, ulcers only on the side it lies on).

Special attention:

  • Compare color symmetry
  • Check both gills (one-sided breathing = parasites)

Photo 3: Head-on — front view

What you check:

  • ✅ Body width (healthy = full cheek)
  • ✅ Symmetric, prominent eyes
  • ✅ The typical "disc" shape
  • ⚠️ Facial asymmetry = possible HITH or Mycobacterium

Photo 4: Dorsal — top view

Hard to get, but critical. Ask the seller to turn the discus with a clear container.

What you check:

  • ✅ Body thickness (healthy = thick, "full" across the back)
  • ❌ Wasting = a narrow "knife edge" along the spine
  • ⚠️ Spinal deformities (fish TB / Mycobacterium)

Photo 5: Ventral — underside view (belly)

What you check:

  • ✅ Flat belly (healthy)
  • 🚨 Symmetrically swollen belly = constipation / Hexamita / early Dropsy
  • 🚨 Inflamed / red vent = intestinal parasite
  • ✅ Feces hanging from the vent = constipation

Photo 6: Close-up of head + gills

Macro focus on:

  • ✅ Eyes — clear, no haze
  • 🚨 Bluish eyes = bacterial infection
  • 🚨 Bulging eyes = Popeye
  • ✅ Gills — uniform pink-red
  • 🚨 Pale gills = anemia / parasites
  • 🚨 Inflamed gills = gill disease
  • ✅ Mouth — naturally closed
  • 🚨 Mouth held open permanently = Columnaris / gill disease

BONUS photo: The tank bottom (feces)

MANDATORY. Ask the seller to stop filtration for 10 min + photograph the tank bottom.

What you check:

  • ✅ Compact brown feces = normal digestion
  • 🚨 White stringy feces = Hexamita
  • 🚨 Bloody feces = internal hemorrhage
  • ⚠️ Food remains = overfeeding / fish not eating

VIDEO checklist — 3 mandatory minutes

Video 1: LIVE feeding (60 seconds)

The most important evidence. Ask the seller to FEED the discus LIVE.

What you check:

BehaviorInterpretation
Comes FIRST to food (≤10 sec)✅ Dominant, healthy
Comes within 30–60 sec✅ Normal
Comes last, eats little⚠️ Intimidated / adjusting
Doesn't come at all🚨 DISEASE — refuse
Comes but spits it out🚨 Oral problems / Columnaris
Eats then leaves immediately⚠️ Stress in the group

RULE: a seller who refuses a live feeding = there's a reason — don't buy.

Video 2: Mid-water swimming + group (60 seconds)

A relaxed shot, without the seller's hand in frame.

What you check:

  • ✅ ACTIVE mid-water swimming
  • ✅ A compact group, shoaling
  • ⚠️ Your discus isolated from the group = bullying / disease
  • 🚨 On the bottom 60+ sec = serious condition
  • 🚨 Tilted sideways swimming = swim-bladder problems
  • 🚨 Floating at the surface with the mouth open = suffocation

Video 3: Close-up of breathing + body (60 seconds)

Camera 30 cm (~12 in) away, focused on the gills and flanks.

What you count:

  • Gill beats over 60 seconds — normal 60–80/min, over 100 = gill parasites, over 120 = EMERGENCY.
  • SYMMETRIC breathing (both gills opening equally) — one-sided = unilateral parasites.
  • Gulps of air at the surface — frequent = oxygen deficit.

Body details:

  • ✅ Normal slime coat (a subtle sheen)
  • 🚨 Excess slime ("haze" on the body) = parasites / osmotic shock
  • 🚨 Silvery glints on the body = Costia / Trichodina
  • 🚨 White spots like grains = Ich

12 MANDATORY questions for the seller

About the fish

  1. "What's the EXACT variety and genetic source?" — a good answer: "Red Turquoise Stendker, 2024 batch" or "Albino Ring Leopard, Asian Malaysia, imported 6 months ago." A vague answer = an amateur seller or a scam.

  2. "How old is the fish (months/years)?" — matters for value and breeding. 6 months = juvenile (buying for growth), 18 months = sub-adult, 3+ years = adult (buying for immediate breeding).

  3. "What's the EXACT size in cm?" — measured from the snout tip to the base of the tail. Not "8–10 cm approximately" — exactly "9 cm / 3.5 in" or "8.5 cm / 3.3 in."

  4. "How long have you had it in the tank?" — under 2 weeks = a reseller (don't buy without your own extended quarantine). 2+ months = it's been observed in the seller's tank = less risk.

About health

  1. "Has it ever been treated for disease? For what and when?" — an honest answer = "Yes, Hexamita 6 months ago, fully recovered" is fine. "No, never" for an adult = possibly untrue (most discus go through something in their lives).

  2. "Do you quarantine new fish?" — the EXPECTED answer: "Yes, 4 weeks minimum, separate from my stock." "No" or "I add them straight in" = don't buy.

  3. "How do you feed, and how many times a day?" — a good answer: "2–3×/day with premium pellets + thawed brine shrimp + beef heart 1×/week." "Normal food" = an amateur.

About water

  1. "What are the EXACT water parameters?" (pH, TDS, T°, GH, KH) — the expected answer: exact numbers tested weekly. "Normal water" = they don't test = don't buy.

  2. "Do you use tap water or RO?" — for Asian discus it should be RO + remineralizer. For Stendker, hard tap water is fine.

About logistics

  1. "How do you transport the fish?" — the expected answer: double bag + pure oxygen + insulated box + a heat pack in winter. Not "in a normal bag."

  2. "Do you offer a DOA (Dead On Arrival) guarantee?" — the minimum acceptable answer: 7 days. A serious seller: 14–30 days for death through no fault of yours.

  3. "Can we do a LIVE video call now / tomorrow to see the fish?" — the expected answer: "Yes, any time during working hours." A refusal / a delay > 48h = a problem.

The traps of "polished" photos

🚨 Trap 1: Red / orange light

Why it's used: it hides paleness, boosts reds and masks small lesions.

Test: ask for a photo with neutral light (6500K LED) or natural daylight.

🚨 Trap 2: Instagram filters / post-processing

Signs:

  • Unnaturally "over-saturated" colors
  • Extreme contrast (crushed blacks, blown-out whites)
  • "Glued" edges (over-sharpened)
  • An artificially blurred background

Test: ask for raw photos straight off the phone + possibly with the EXIF date visible.

🚨 Trap 3: Old or stock photos

Signs:

  • The same photos across Facebook + Instagram + classifieds (= "marketing" photos)
  • Professional photo quality (an amateur seller doesn't have it)
  • A reverse Google image search → photos from Asian websites

Mandatory test: ask for a photo WITH A SPECIFIC OBJECT by the tank (today's newspaper, or a sheet of paper with your name and the date).

🚨 Trap 4: "Select" angles

Technique: the seller films ONLY the good side of the fish (the side without lesions).

Mitigation: ask for ALL 6 MANDATORY angles from the checklist + 2–3 short videos from DIFFERENT DAYS.

🚨 Trap 5: "Display" tank vs real tank

Trick: the seller has 1 "display" tank with perfect water for photos, but the real fish are in another, dirty tank.

Test: ask for a video in which the seller MOVES the fish from one tank to another (or ask for multiple backgrounds).

🚨 Trap 6: Substitution on delivery

A common scam: photos of premium fish A, delivery of less valuable fish B (a different variety, a smaller size).

Mitigation:

  • ✅ Photos + video specific to the exact fish you'll receive
  • ✅ A photo of a distinctive mark (a unique asymmetry, a specific pattern) on your fish
  • ✅ Payment on delivery (cash on delivery via courier) or an in-person meeting
  • ✅ Refuse the fish on delivery if it doesn't match — don't pay

LIVE video call — the definitive test

For high-value purchases, insist on a 10–15 min LIVE video call.

What to ask to see:

  1. ✅ The whole tank — not just your fish, but the entire environment
  2. ✅ A thermometer on the tank — read the temperature LIVE
  3. ✅ A LIVE feeding — see the fish react in real time
  4. ✅ The seller's hand at all times (no environment swap)
  5. ✅ The date and time shown on the phone (check EXIF)
  6. ✅ A personal exchange — spontaneous questions (to verify it's not a pre-recorded video)

Apps for the LIVE video:

  • WhatsApp video call
  • Telegram video call
  • FaceTime (Apple)
  • Google Meet / Zoom (more formal)

It costs nothing, takes 15 min and avoids the loss of a fish you can't return.

Reverse image check

Check the photos you receive with a reverse image search:

  1. Save the photo
  2. Go to images.google.com
  3. Click the camera icon (search by image)
  4. Upload the photo
  5. Check whether identical results appear on other sites / forums

If the photo appears on Asian breeder sites, on Pinterest or on forums = a stolen photo, the seller doesn't have it (a scam).

Final virtual-inspection checklist

BEFORE contacting the seller

  • ☐ Research the seller online (Facebook, forums, reviews)
  • ☐ Check real market prices for the variety
  • ☐ Prepare the list of 12 MANDATORY questions

When talking to the seller

  • ☐ Ask for the 6 MANDATORY photo angles
  • ☐ Ask for 3 videos (feeding + swimming + close-up breathing)
  • ☐ Ask all 12 questions
  • ☐ Run a reverse image search on the photos received
  • ☐ Ask for a photo WITH A SPECIFIC OBJECT by the tank for authenticity
  • ☐ A LIVE video call of 10–15 min (for high-value purchases)

ABSOLUTE RULES — refuse the purchase

  • ❌ Seller refuses a LIVE video
  • ❌ Seller refuses a live feeding
  • ❌ Won't send the 6 MANDATORY angles
  • ❌ The photos appear on other sites (reverse image search)
  • ❌ Only "polished" / Instagram photos
  • ❌ Doesn't know the EXACT water parameters
  • ❌ Demands full payment up front by instant transfer

On arrival — final check

  • ☐ Compare the fish with the photos received (distinctive marks)
  • ☐ Check ALL lesions (body, fins, eyes)
  • ☐ Count breathing for 60 sec
  • ☐ Observe behavior for 15 min in the bag
  • ☐ Refuse delivery if it differs from what was promised

Common virtual-inspection mistakes

❌ "The photos looked good, I didn't ask for video" — photos are "taken at good times," a LIVE video doesn't lie.

❌ "I trusted the seller without a reverse image check" — some sketchy sellers use stolen photos. The check takes 30 seconds.

❌ "I accepted red-light photos" — they hide many lesions. Ask for neutral LED or daylight.

❌ "I didn't insist on a LIVE feeding because they were busy" — a serious seller has 60 seconds to feed. A refusal = a problem.

❌ "I paid 100% up front based on photos" — never. Pay on delivery or cash on delivery.

❌ "I didn't verify the delivered fish = the fish in the photos" — substitution is common. Ask for distinctive marks (a unique pattern).

❌ "A 30-second video call was all the seller wanted" — 30 seconds isn't enough to evaluate. Insist on 10–15 min.

Frequently asked questions

A well-done virtual inspection covers most of what you'd check in person. From photos and video you can assess well: stress bars, body shape, lesions, fins, breathing (counting gill beats), feeding behavior. What you can't: the tank's smell, real water quality, long-term behavior. Mitigate with 2–3 videos on different days + a reverse image search + a LIVE video call for valuable purchases.
