How to test discus aquarium water: liquid kits vs strips
How to test the water for discus — a complete guide with 5 methods (API/JBL/Sera liquid kits, quick strips, a TDS meter, an electronic pH meter, a thermometer), accuracy and how to read results.

Quick summary
- Liquid drop tests are the standard for discus (roughly ±5% accuracy).
- Strips can be off by 20–30% — don't use them for diagnosis.
- Weekly: pH, ammonia (NH₃), nitrite (NO₂), nitrate (NO₃), temperature.
- Monthly: KH and GH.
- Reagents typically expire in 18–24 months — check the date on the bottle.
- Read under natural white light, not a warm/yellow bulb or cool LED.
In short
- Liquid drop tests = the standard for discus (roughly ±5% accuracy).
- Strips = quick spot checks only (can be off by 20–30%, not for diagnosis).
- A minimal kit: an API Freshwater Master Test Kit (covers pH, NH₃, NO₂, NO₃) + a TDS meter + a digital thermometer.
- Test weekly: pH, ammonia (NH₃), nitrite (NO₂), nitrate (NO₃), temperature.
- Reagents expire after roughly 18–24 months — check the date on the bottle.
- Read under natural white light, not a yellow bulb or cool LED — the colors mislead.
What you'll learn
Discus (Symphysodon) are sensitive to water quality, and most health problems start with parameters out of range — ammonia above 0, swinging pH, low KH. Regular testing is prevention. This guide walks through the 5 testing methods (with accuracy notes), what to choose by budget and experience level, and how to avoid common reading mistakes. For the target values, see Ideal water parameters.
What you must test

The 5 testing methods
1. Liquid drop tests ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The community standard. You add drops of reagent to a water sample, watch the color change, and compare it against a chart.
| Pro | Con |
|---|---|
| Roughly ±5% accuracy | Takes 5–15 min per test |
| Low cost per test | Color reading is subjective |
| Lasts 18–24 months | Many separate bottles |
Recommended kits (widely available):
| Kit | Tests included |
|---|---|
| API Freshwater Master ⭐ | pH, NH₃, NO₂, NO₃ |
| JBL ProAquaTest Lab | 11 complete tests |
| JBL Test Combi Set | pH + NH₄ + NO₂ + NO₃ + GH + KH |
| Sera aqua-test box | German premium |
| Tetra Test Lab | Affordable, good quality |
💡 For beginners: an API Master kit plus a separate GH/KH test is a complete setup that lasts about a year.
2. Test strips ⭐⭐⭐
Fast but imprecise. Dip the strip for a second, wait 30–60s, compare to the chart.
| Pro | Con |
|---|---|
| Very fast (1–2 min) | Accuracy around ±20–30% |
| Multiple parameters at once | Doesn't read NH₃ precisely |
| Cheap per kit | Short shelf life after opening (3–6 months) |
Use strips ONLY for:
- Quick checks after a water change
- Monitoring between liquid tests
- Travel / transporting fish
Do NOT use strips for:
- Disease diagnosis
- Cycling a new tank (you need real accuracy)
- Breeding
3. Digital TDS meter ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Essential if you use RO water. Dip the probe in the water and read the value instantly in ppm.
- HM Digital TDS-3 — reliable budget pick
- Hanna HI98301 — premium
- Milwaukee TS-01 — solid mid-range
Calibrate once a year with a reference solution.
4. Electronic pH meter ⭐⭐⭐⭐
For maximum accuracy (±0.01 pH). Useful for tanks with injected CO₂ or for breeding.
- Hanna pHep HI98107 — reliable
- Milwaukee MW102 — premium
Needs regular calibration (4.01 + 7.01 buffer). Electrodes wear out in 1–2 years.
5. Digital thermometer ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mandatory. Stick-on "sticky" thermometers can be off by ±2°C (±3.6°F).
- JBL Digital Thermometer — accurate and cheap
- Dennerle Digital — premium
- Infrared thermometers — non-contact spot checks
Recommended setup by budget
💶 Prices vary a lot by country and retailer, so we describe tiers rather than fixed costs. The figures below are a RO estimate (2026) in approximate EUR only.
Minimal (RO estimate ~€66)
- API Freshwater Master Test Kit
- HM Digital TDS-3 meter
- JBL digital thermometer
Mid-range (RO estimate ~€113)
- JBL Test Combi Set (pH+NH₄+NO₂+NO₃+GH+KH)
- TDS meter
- Premium digital thermometer
- JBL 7-in-1 strips (quick backup)
Premium (RO estimate ~€226)
- JBL ProAquaTest Lab (11 complete tests)
- Hanna pHep HI98107
- Hanna TDS HI98301
- Digital + infrared thermometer
How to test correctly — step by step
- Rinse the vial with the water you're testing (no detergent, no tap water)
- Take the sample from 5–10 cm (2–4 in) below the surface, not at the top
- Add the reagent holding the bottle vertical (consistent drop size)
- Shake firmly for 5–10 seconds (or as instructed)
- Wait the stated time (3–5 minutes for most)
- Read under natural white light — not a yellow bulb, not a cool LED
- Compare against a white background (a sheet of paper) for maximum contrast
Common mistakes
❌ Expired reagents — check the date on the bottle (18–24 month shelf life) ❌ Dirty vials — rinse with the test water first ❌ Reading under a yellow bulb — it distorts the colors ❌ Damp strips — keep the tube tightly closed, away from the bathroom ❌ A single test when you see abnormal values — RE-TEST before you act ❌ Testing right after a water change — wait at least 30 minutes ❌ Unshaken reagent — shake the bottle well before use
Interpretation — which values are OK?
| Test | Green (OK) | Yellow (caution) | Red (emergency) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ammonia NH₃ | 0 ppm | 0.05–0.25 ppm | over 0.5 ppm |
| Nitrite NO₂ | 0 ppm | 0.1–0.25 ppm | over 0.5 ppm |
| Nitrate NO₃ | under 20 ppm | 20–40 ppm | over 80 ppm |
| pH | 6.0–7.5 | 5.5–6.0 / 7.5–8.0 | under 5.0 / over 8.5 |
| KH | 2–5 dKH | 1–2 dKH | under 1 dKH |
| TDS | 100–300 | 300–450 | over 500 |
⚠️ Red = act immediately. 50% water change + a double dose of Seachem Prime + investigate the cause (see Ammonia and nitrite).
Keep a test log
Record your values weekly in a notebook or app:
| Date | T° | pH | NH₃ | NO₂ | NO₃ | KH | TDS | Actions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ... | 29 | 7.2 | 0 | 0 | 15 | 3 | 280 | 25% change |
A log helps you spot trends (rising nitrate = increase change frequency) and identify causes (does NH₃ rise every time after a filter clean? change your method).
Weekly checklist
- ☐ Thermometer: confirmed 28–30°C (82–86°F)
- ☐ pH tested and logged
- ☐ Ammonia tested = 0 ppm
- ☐ Nitrite tested = 0 ppm
- ☐ Nitrate tested (act if over 40 ppm)
- ☐ TDS checked before a water change
- ☐ Reagents within their shelf life
- ☐ Values written in the log
