Pigeon Blood
Symphysodon sp.
Description
Pigeon Blood is one of the most refined and influential varieties, characterized by a warm orange-yellow background and distinctive black spots on the fins. It has generated derivative varieties such as Marlboro Red, Red Melon, and White Butterfly.
🌍 Origin & History
Created in Thailand, Bangkok, in the early '90s by specialized Asian breeders. Pigeon Blood revolutionized the discus industry by introducing a completely new background color: orange-cream without stress bars. It was quickly exported worldwide and spawned dozens of derivative varieties.
Appearance
Body without vertical stress bars. Intensely uniform orange-yellow to cream body background. Characteristic: small black spots ('pepper') distributed on the snout, cheeks, and sometimes fins — more visible under stress. Bright red eyes. Dorsal and anal fins have specific black edges. The body is well-rounded, with a 'clean' and bright appearance.
🧬 Genetic background
The Pigeon Blood gene is dominant — a single PB specimen crossed with any other variety produces 100% offspring with Pigeon Blood characteristics (without vertical bars). It originates from a spontaneous mutation or selection in Asian discus lines. The characteristic black spots ('pepper markings') on the snout and fins are a specific genetic marker for this gene. Pepper spots are more pronounced under stress or illness.
Recommended water parameters
Care
