Red flags when buying discus: 15 warning signs
Discus red flags — 15 physical and behavioral signs to avoid when buying: permanent stress bars, white feces, rapid breathing, sunken eyes, a sketchy seller — plus 5 seller red flags.

Quick summary
- Top 5 physical red flags: permanent stress bars, white/stringy feces, breathing >100/min, sunken eyes (wasting), white/fuzzy patches on the body.
- Behavioral red flags: sitting in a corner, darkening, refusing food in front of you, swimming tilted, flashing against décor.
- Seller red flags: refuses a live video, water parameters they "don't know exactly", no quarantine at source, a price far below market, "buy now or lose it" pressure.
- Mandatory test: ask for a live feeding on video before you pay — a healthy discus comes to food FIRST.
- The seller's tank: dirty glass, other sick fish, visible ammonia smell = buy NOTHING from there.
- A bad buy means a discus that dies in 1–3 weeks — and the money lost with it.

What you'll learn
Red flags when buying discus (Symphysodon) are 15 physical, behavioral and seller-side signs that point to a sick fish or a sketchy seller. A large share of discus that die in the first month showed visible red flags at purchase — but the buyer didn't recognize them, or ignored them out of excitement. This guide shows you how to spot problems before you pay, what to refuse outright and how to use photos + video to evaluate from a distance.
Physical red flags — 5 critical signs
1. Intense, permanent stress bars
Stress bars = the 9 dark vertical bars that are genetically present on a discus's body. Their intensity varies with the fish's emotional state.
| Stress-bar state | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| ❌ Completely invisible | Healthy discus at rest |
| ⚠️ Moderately visible while feeding/exploring | Normal — excitement |
| 🚨 INTENSELY dark PERMANENTLY | CHRONIC STRESS or disease — don't buy |
| 🚨 Whole body very dark | Maximum stress — REFUSE |
Test: watch the discus for 5–10 minutes in the seller's tank. If the stress bars stay intensely visible the whole time = a problem.
See Discus body language for full details.
2. White or stringy feces
The most serious internal red flag. It points to Hexamita (Spironucleus vortens) — a common discus disease.
| Feces observed | Diagnosis |
|---|---|
| ✅ Brown, compact | Healthy |
| ⚠️ Light brown, short | Recent stress — watch |
| 🚨 WHITE, stringy, transparent | HEXAMITA — refuse the purchase |
| 🚨 With mucus, hanging from the vent | Constipation + possible Hexamita |
| 🚨 With blood | Internal hemorrhage — TERMINAL |
Mandatory test: ask for photos of the tank bottom (where feces collect) BEFORE buying. A serious seller sends them right away.
See Hexamita / Hole-in-the-head.
3. Rapid breathing (>100/min)
Normal rate: 60–80 gill-cover (operculum) beats per minute.
| Breathing rate | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 60–80/min | Normal |
| 80–100/min | Slightly stressed or high temperature |
| 100–120/min | GILL PARASITES or low O2 |
| >120/min | EMERGENCY — acute gill infection |
| Only one gill working | Unilateral parasites — REFUSE |
Test: count the gill beats for 60 seconds with a timer. Repeat on 2–3 discus in the group for comparison.
4. Sunken eyes (severe wasting)
A healthy discus has a round, full body. The eyes look prominent because the cheek is full.
| Eye/body appearance | Diagnosis |
|---|---|
| ✅ Prominent eyes, round body | Healthy |
| ⚠️ Normal eyes, slightly thin body | Recently losing weight |
| 🚨 EYES LOOK BIG and SUNKEN | SEVERE WASTING — advanced Hexamita / Mycobacterium |
| 🚨 "Butterfly"-shaped body (thin top-to-bottom) | Chronic anorexia — REFUSE |
| 🚨 Bulging eyes (Popeye) | Bacterial infection / Mycobacterium |
See Mycobacterium / fish TB — a ZOONOTIC disease.
5. Body lesions — white, fuzzy patches or ulcers
Examine the whole body under good light.
| Body appearance | Diagnosis |
|---|---|
| ✅ Clean, normal slime coat, no spots | Healthy |
| 🚨 White spots like grains of salt | Ich (Ichthyophthirius) |
| 🚨 Fine golden/brown dust | Oodinium / Velvet |
| 🚨 White fuzzy filaments | Saprolegnia (fungus) |
| 🚨 Sticky white patches ("cotton mouth") | Columnaris — lethal in 24–72h |
| 🚨 Red ulcers/wounds on the body | Aeromonas / infected trauma |
| 🚨 HITH — pits on the head | Advanced Hexamita |
| 🚨 Raised scales (pinecone shape) | Dropsy — TERMINAL |
ABSOLUTE RULE: any visible lesion = refuse the purchase. Treatment costs money and there's a real risk the fish still dies.
Behavioral red flags — 5 signs
6. Sitting in a corner or on the bottom
A healthy discus swims mid-water, explores the tank and comes up at feeding time.
| Behavior | Diagnosis |
|---|---|
| ✅ Active mid-water swimming | Healthy |
| ⚠️ Holding still but upright | Possible recent stress |
| 🚨 Sitting in a corner, tilted | ADVANCED DISEASE |
| 🚨 On the bottom 24h+ | Terminal |
| 🚨 Swimming tilted sideways | Swim-bladder problems — often irreversible |
See The discus sits in a corner.
7. Refuses food in front of you
THE DEFINITIVE health test. Ask the seller to feed the discus live on video or during a visit.
| Reaction to food | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| ✅ Comes FIRST, greedy, eats fast | Healthy, dominant |
| ✅ Comes within 30–60 sec, eats moderately | Normal |
| ⚠️ Comes last, eats little | Intimidated in the group, or adjusting |
| 🚨 Doesn't come to food at all | TOTAL REFUSAL — disease |
| 🚨 Comes but spits it out immediately | Oral problems / early Columnaris |
RULE: if the seller refuses to feed on video = there's a reason — don't buy.
8. Flashing against décor
The discus rubs against rocks, wood, glass or substrate.
- 1–2 incidents in 10 minutes = possibly normal (irritated slime coat)
- 3+ incidents = EXTERNAL PARASITES (early Ich, flukes, Costia, Trichodina)
- Combined with rapid breathing = gill parasites → needs treatment
9. Clamped or torn fins
| Fin appearance | Diagnosis |
|---|---|
| ✅ Dorsal up and straight, pectorals open | Confidence, health |
| ⚠️ Dorsal temporarily clamped | Momentary stress |
| 🚨 Dorsal PERMANENTLY CLAMPED | Chronic stress / disease |
| 🚨 Torn/ragged fins | Fin rot or bullying within the group |
| 🚨 Milky white edges | Early Columnaris |
See Fin rot in discus.
10. Permanently isolated from the group
Discus are a group species (a shoal of 5+). A discus permanently isolated in the seller's tank:
- 🚨 Bullying — an alpha discus excludes it → chronic stress → disease
- 🚨 A sick discus — instinctively separating so it isn't attacked
- 🚨 A new, un-acclimated discus — the seller is selling you a fish from another, un-quarantined batch
Ask for clarification — why is it isolated, since when, what happened. A vague answer = don't buy.
Seller red flags — 5 critical signs
11. Refuses a live video before buying
THE DEFINITIVE TEST. A serious breeder sends, right away:
- A 2–3 minute video of the discus swimming
- A video of the group feeding
- Photos of the tank bottom (feces)
- Photos of the displayed water parameters
A refusal or stalling = there's something to hide. Don't negotiate, move to another seller.
12. "I don't know the water parameters exactly"
| Seller's answer | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| ✅ "pH 6.8, TDS 180, 30°C / 86°F, KH 3" | A pro — they know |
| ⚠️ "Soft water, around 28°C / 82°F" | An amateur but honest |
| 🚨 "Normal tap water" | Doesn't test — don't buy |
| 🚨 "I don't measure, the fish grow anyway" | Irresponsible |
| 🚨 "Stendker at pH 7.5 like everyone" (but it's Asian) | Doesn't know what they're selling |
13. The seller's tank is in poor condition
Visit in person if you can. Red:
- ❌ Dirty glass, heavy algae
- ❌ Other visibly sick fish
- ❌ A strong ammonia smell
- ❌ Dirty substrate, accumulated feces
- ❌ Temperature below 28°C / 82°F
- ❌ A weak / stopped filter
- ❌ Discus from several sources in the same tank (= no quarantine)
If you see anything from the list above → leave without buying. The pathogens in that environment are already on the fish.
14. A price far below market
RED FLAG: a price 40–60% below market (e.g. a premium grade offered at a fraction of the going rate) almost certainly means:
- A sick discus that's about to die
- A discus from an unknown source (a reseller, NOT a breeder)
- A scam (a fake variety sold as premium)
🇷🇴 Romania estimate (2026): local juveniles 5–6 cm (2–2.4 in) ~80–150 RON; Stendker sub-adults 7–8 cm (2.8–3 in) ~150–300 RON; "high-grade" Asian 8–10 cm (3–4 in) ~350–700 RON; premium adults 12 cm+ (4.7 in+) ~400–1500 RON. Use your local market for reference — these figures need manual review per country.
15. Pressure to buy fast
- 🚨 "Buy today or lose it — other buyers are waiting"
- 🚨 "Only 24h left in stock"
- 🚨 "Pay a 50% deposit now by instant transfer"
- 🚨 Refuses an in-person meeting / courier
- 🚨 Refuses a 7–14 day guarantee for death through no fault of yours
A SERIOUS breeder offers:
- ✅ Time to evaluate (video, photos, questions)
- ✅ An in-person meeting or documented professional transport
- ✅ A DOA (Dead On Arrival) guarantee, 7–14 days
- ✅ Payment on delivery or a verifiable online reputation
