What you'll learn
Apistogramma are South American dwarf cichlids from the Amazon — the same natural biotope as discus. They're small (4–8 cm / 1.6–3.1 in), spectacularly colorful in males, territorial but on the bottom zone (zero competition with discus, which stay in the middle). This guide shows you the 3 main compatible species, the shared parameters and how to manage territoriality in a discus aquarium.
Top 3 Apistogramma species compatible with discus
1. Apistogramma agassizii ⭐ #1
The most popular and recommended for Apisto beginners.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 26–30°C (79–86°F) ✅ |
| pH | 5.5–7.0 |
| Male size | 7–8 cm (2.8–3.1 in) |
| Female size | 4–5 cm (1.6–2 in) |
| EU price 2026 | €15–30 per pair |
| Territory | 30×30 cm (12×12 in) minimum |
Appearance: males with a sword tail (lyre shape), variable colors (red tail, blue, yellow). Females yellow with black stripes.
2. Apistogramma cacatuoides (Cockatoo dwarf cichlid)
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–29°C (75–84°F) ✅ |
| pH | 6.0–7.5 |
| Male size | 8 cm (3.1 in) |
| Female size | 5 cm (2 in) |
| EU price 2026 | €10–20 per pair |
Appearance: males with a spectacular dorsal fin (triple red, orange flash forms). More tolerant of hard water than agassizii.
3. Apistogramma borellii (Umbrella cichlid)
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 22–27°C (72–81°F) ⚠️ |
| pH | 6.0–7.5 |
| Size | 5–6 cm (2–2.4 in) |
⚠️ 27°C (81°F) limit — at 29°C (84°F) with discus it's at its upper limit. Acceptable but not optimal.
Shared parameters: discus + Apistogramma
| Parameter | Discus | Apistogramma | Compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 28–30°C (82–86°F) | 24–30°C (75–86°F) | 28–29°C (82–84°F) ✅ |
| pH | 6.0–7.0 | 5.5–7.0 | 6.5 ✅ |
| TDS | 100–300 ppm | 50–200 ppm | 150 ppm ✅ |
| KH | 1–4 dKH | 0–4 dKH | 2 dKH ✅ |
Verdict: Apistogramma and discus have fully compatible parameters — no compromise needed.
Territory setup for Apistogramma
Tank of at least 250L (66 US gal)
Apistogramma are territorial — they need their own space on the bottom:
- 1 pair (1M + 1F) → at least 200L (53 US gal) with a defined territory
- Harem (1M + 2–3F) → at least 250L (66 US gal) with 2–3 separate territories
- 2 pairs of different species → at least 400L (106 US gal) (3+ territories)
Mandatory territory elements
- A hideout/cave (an upturned flowerpot, half a coconut, wood with a cavity)
- Marker plants (Anubias, Cryptocoryne) at the edge of the territory
- Fine substrate (sand) — Apistogramma dig in the substrate
- Reduced visibility between territories (line of sight blocked with plants/wood)
How they coexist with discus
Zone differences
| Species | Tank zone | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| Discus | Mid-upper | — |
| Apistogramma | Bottom | Zero ✅ |
| Cardinals | Mid-upper | Low |
| Cory | Bottom | Low (Apisto territorial) |
⚠️ Watch Cory + Apisto: Cory sterbai are peaceful but invade the Apistogramma territory. Solution: a tank large enough (250L+ / 66+ US gal) for separate zones.
Feeding
Apistogramma feed on the bottom — sinking pellets, worms, falling brine shrimp.
Trick: feed the discus in the middle with floating pellets, then add bottom-feeder tablets for the Apistogramma.
Parallel breeding
Apistogramma and discus can breed simultaneously in the same tank (different species, no hybridization). But:
- ✅ Apistogramma lay eggs in the cave and guard the territory
- ⚠️ Discus become aggressive during breeding — they may bother the Apistogramma
- ❌ Apisto fry and discus fry eat each other
Recommendation: if you plan serious breeding of either species, separate them into a dedicated tank.
Proven combinations
250L (66 US gal) tank
- 6 × discus
- 1 pair A. agassizii (1M + 1F)
- 15 × cardinals
- 6 × Cory sterbai
- 1 × Ancistrus
400L (106 US gal) tank (harem)
- 8 × discus
- 1 harem A. agassizii (1M + 3F)
- 1 pair A. cacatuoides (a different species)
- 25 × cardinals
- 10 × rummynose
- 8 × Cory sterbai
- 2 × Ancistrus
⚠️ For 2 Apisto species: visually separated territories with tall plants / central wood.
Common mistakes
❌ "I'll keep 1 male + 1 male Apisto" — Fatal territorial fights. 1 male max per species in the tank, or a 400L+ (106+ US gal) tank for 2 males with visually separated territories.
❌ "Apistogramma on coarse gravel" — They dig in the substrate — fine sand is mandatory (they injure their mouths on sharp gravel).
❌ "A densely planted tank with no caves" — Apistogramma need enclosed hideouts (a cave) for breeding and safety, not just plants.
❌ "Apisto borellii at 29°C (84°F)" — 27°C (81°F) limit. At 29°C with discus they suffer. Choose agassizii or cacatuoides.
❌ "Multiple Apisto species without space" — Hybridization is unlikely (different species) BUT territorial fights between males occur. 400L+ (106+ US gal) for 2 pairs.
