With 1–2 weeks of preparation, adult discus get through a short holiday calmly.
Quick summary
Healthy adults: 5–7 days without food is fine
Fry under 3 months shouldn't go without food
Big water change 1–2 days before, not on departure day
Don't change the filter or add new fish before leaving
Better underfed than overfed by a neighbor
In short
A healthy adult discus easily goes about a week without food; some breeders report even 2–3 weeks. An adult won't starve during a normal holiday.
Fry and juveniles (under 3–4 months) need daily food – for them you need someone to feed them.
The biggest holiday risk isn't hunger, but water fouled by overfeeding or failing equipment.

Recommendation
Adults (12+ cm / 5+ in)
5–7 days
Can be left alone for a week
Sub-adults (8–12 cm)
3–4 days
Ideally fed every 2–3 days
Juveniles (5–8 cm)
1–2 days
Daily feeding
Fry (under 5 cm)
No
3–5 feedings a day – needs a sitter
For juveniles, a long break means stunted growth that is never fully recovered.
Checklist: 1–2 weeks before
Don't add new fish or start new treatments.
Don't replace the filter media – a reset filter can mini-cycle exactly while you're away.
Check the heater (with a separate thermometer) and filter hoses. If the heater is old, install a new one now and watch it for a few days.
Put the light on a timer (6–8 hours). Less light is better than more.
Checklist: 1–2 days before
Do a large water change (50% or more) and siphon the bottom well – 1–2 days before, not on departure day, so you can see everything is stable.
Clean the filter: rinse the sponge/prefilter in water taken from the tank (never under the tap) so it leaves at full flow.
Feed normally, with no leftovers.
Test ammonia/nitrite – both should be 0.
On departure day: don't feed heavily "so they have a reserve". That fouls the water.
If someone feeds them
Pre-portion the food into boxes/sachets per day (pellets) or counted cubes of frozen food. Write clearly: "1 sachet per day".
Hide the rest of the food. Well-meaning neighbors are the #1 cause of holiday problems.
Leave written instructions: where the breaker is, what to do if the filter stops, your phone number.
No water changes by someone else for trips under 10–14 days.
Automatic feeders – yes or no?
They can work for juveniles or long trips, with pellets (not flakes, which clump with moisture). Test it 1–2 weeks before while you're home and set small doses. Don't use plaster "vacation" feeder blocks – they foul the water and discus rarely eat them.
When you get back
Don't feed heavily on day one – resume gradually with 2 small meals.
Test the water and do a 30–50% change.
Check every fish: appetite, color, swimming.
